My Summer Strawberry Protein Smoothie

By admin On June 30, 2007 3 Comments

Here it is folks.  Does it look fantastic or what?

It’s simple to make.  I put 1 cup of frozen strawberries, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 4 oz. of water, and mix.  Easy stuff.  You can add a bit more or less water to change the thickness.  I’ll add more strawberries to make it EXTRA LARGE.

This is REALLY an awesome smoothie.  I get my day started every day with it.

Give it a try!

Dennis Hardy’s P90X Review: 60 Days Complete

By admin On June 30, 2007 No Comments

I’ve recently reached my 60th day on Beachbody’s P90X extreme home workout program.  All I can say is WOW!  The past 60 days of P90X have been absolutely incredible.  I’ve made gains that I NEVER thought were possible two months ago.    Here are my latest shots (I’m still trying to perfect the “take a picture in the mirror” thing.

My Coach, Mike French, told me that I had ”some serious armour plating going on”!  That made me feel pretty good.  I’ve also received lots of great comments and feedback from my fellow P90Xer’s.  My biceps have been growing and my back is getting some pretty good definition and size.  I’m still working on my lower abs.  They are the “beast”!  They are coming though.

My repetitions on pullups and pushups are starting to get insane.  I did 28 reverse grip pullups(chinups) this past week and 22 regular pullups.  That’s a far cry from the single digit reps. I was doing in the first weeks.  My waist has stayed close to 31-32 and my weight is around 173 at this point.  The fat loss was obvious in the first 30 day phase and now the muscle growth is accelerating in the 2nd 30 day phase.  I’ll be excited to see the final 90 day results!

Mike and I recently had a long talk about the Team Beachbody Coaching Program.  Because of my success thus far with p90X, Mike thought I would make a good coach myself.  After thinking it over and discussing it with my wife, I decided to make the commitment and signed up to be an Independent Team Beachbody Fitness Coach!  P90X has really been a blessing to me.  A “life changing” event, if you will.  I was recently chatting with a fellow P90X’er on a forum and we both agreed that P90X was no longer just a workout program, but a new way of life for us.  It’s really hard to explain….but I’m going to have fun trying! :)  I can’t wait to start helping people change their lives and their body…one at a time.

Ok….so where do I go from here?  Well, my 90 day results will be coming in a few weeks.  I’m also going to be posting to this blog every day to few days. Some days it will be about the workout for that day, what I’m eating, my p90X equipment, some tips ,etc….anything that I consider P90X-worthy.  I hope you’ll bookmark this blog and come back daily….I’ll guarantee  you’ll leave with some motivation and encouragement.

Dennis

P.S. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you about the most delicious smoothie in town!

Dennis Hardy’s P90X Review: The First Month

By admin On June 29, 2007 3 Comments

Weeks 2,3,4 seemed to go by very quickly in my p90X journey.  The workouts were still INTENSLY hard, but I was improving.  My form in Yoga had come a LONG way.  I no longer had to spend every second looking at the TV for correct form.  I had went from only getting 5 pullups at the beginning, to getting 11 or 12.  By the end of day 30, I felt I had come a long way.  There were some definite changes going on in my body…the fat was coming off!

I think one thing that was helping  my weightloss was the HEAT.  I live in central Virginia, one of the most humid places on the face of the earth it seems.  Working out in my garage, I can’t even begin to tell you how hot it was getting by mid-May.  At the end of each workout, I would refresh with Beachbody’s recovery drink.   I can honestly say that it is probably one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth.  I could drink that stuff out of a 50 gallon garbage can!

One thing I did in my first month was make the decision to join Team Beachbody.  What an awesome decision that was!  With my membership…Beachbody, the company that created P90X with Tony Horton, would assign me a coach,  Mike French.  Mike is a former teenage Mr. Maine bobybuilding champion.  I can’t begin to tell you what a difference Mike’s encouragement, motivation, and advice have made in my P90X journey.  He’s helped me tweek my diet and add a few “special” things that you won’t  find in the P90X handbook ;).  Having a coach is only one of the nice things about the Team Beachbody.  There are many!  I also get 10% off on the recovery drink!

At the end of 30 days, an AMAZING 30 pounds gone and some upper abs peeking through!    I haven’t had a chance to go shop for new pants that fit.  I guess that’s the only bad part about the P90X program…buying new clothes!

Stay tuned.  More of my journey lies ahead!

Dennis Hardy’s P90X Review: The First Week

By admin On June 27, 2007 4 Comments
by Dennis Hardy

We’ve all seen the P90X nfomercials on TV.  It’s been touted as this “extreme” 12 DVD home fitness program featuring fitness trainer Tony Horton.    But does it really work?  Can you get a “ripped” muscled up body in 90 days?  That’s the question I wanted answered.   I pulled out my credit card and stepped up to the challenge.

My P90X package arrived on April 8,2007.   It would be a week or two later before I started the program.  With IRS tax day approaching, I knew most of my time would be centered around the horrible chore of preparing and filing taxes.  I wanted a clear mind and schedule when I started P90X.  I wanted to be 110% committed to the program.  If I failed, there would be no excuses.

My first day of P90X was Monday, April 23rd.   It felt like the first day of school and I was excited.   I wasn’t sure what to expect, I just knew that my 200+ lb. body and 36+ inch waist needed ALOT of work!  I knew I had abdominal muscles and was determined to meet them for the first time!  Below is a shot of me just weeks before starting p90X.

I wasn’t far into the first workout when I realized this wasn’t one of my mother’s Jane Fonda workout videos.    I was struggling to keep up and learn the moves.   Pushup after pushup, pullup after pullup….they kept coming one after another.    After finishing a revolution of 12 different exercises, I was pleasantly informed that I would have to REPEAT the sequence again.  Are you kidding me?  My arms are like jello at this point.   Mt heart is pounding and I could have filled a swimming pool with sweat flowing off my body.   I gritted my teeth and continued, as best I could.  The workout finally came to an end.   I was done, now where’s the hot tub?

Well, I thought I was done.  It seems 3 days a week there is this “AbRipperX” 15 minute ab routine tacked on at the end.  These are 11 different ab exercises of 25 reps each.  This workout is an absolute crusher!  I could only do 8-10 reps of each excercise on that first day.  Fortunately, it would get better…I hope!

Day 2 : Tuesday April 24th : Plyometrics

I loaded the second DVD in the player. “Plyometrics”.  These are jumping exercises.  During the warmup, Tony states that this is the “mother of all the workouts”.  The mother?  Are you kidding me?  What was yesterday…A sister or a great aunt?  I’m not ready for the mother!  Then I realized that one of Tony’s workout buddies in the video(he always calls them the “kids”…he’s late 40’s you know) only has one leg.  The other is a prosthetic.  Ok, now I’m feeling like a sissy for even thinking I can’t handle this workout.    “Bring it on” I say.   If I can’t keep up with my two good legs, I’m pathetic.

30 minutes into the workout(most workouts are an hour long) I’m dying! The sweat is coming non stop.  I’m slipping and sliding in the sweat.  My heart is getting ready to pound out of my chest.   My legs are in near collapse on some of the lunge sequences.   I’m trying to close my eyes and take my mind to another place…a better place.  It’s not working though.  Fortunately, the clock keeps ticking and the workout comes to an end.  Time to find the hot tub again.

Day 3 Wednesday April 25th : Arms & Shoulders

I actually enjoyed day 3…the “glamour muscles”.  As I’ve “occasionally” worked out in gyms over the years, I’ve spent the most time working this muscle group. Who wouldn’t rather be working biceps than legs?  This workout comes to an end and I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  We’ve finally done some things that I’m pretty good at.  I’m feeling confident in myself and the p90X program.

Day 4 Thursday April 26th: Yoga

For me, this has to be the most frustrating of all of the workouts!  My confidence gained in day 3 has been shot down by day 4.  Easy come easy go I guess.  I’m falling behind BADLY and can’t seem to get any of the moves right.  I stay with it until the end and hope for a better day on Friday.

Day 5 Friday April 27th: Legs and Back

Legs & Back: This workout is tough.  Lots of squatting and lunging.  I learned a very valuable lesson…Don’t burn out too early in this workout!  You have to pace yourself and “Bring It” in the second half!

Day 6: Saturday April 28th : Kenpo

It was fun.  The Kenpo workout is a martial arts/cardio workout.  Lots of kicking, punching, and sweating.  As far as cardio goes, this one isn’t nearly as intense as the day 2 Plyometrics workout.

Day 7: Sunday April 29th : Stretch “X”

The P90X manual says you can either do the StretchX workout or rest.  I’ve always rested on this day.  Since I started on a Monday, my day 7 always falls on a Sunday.  One thing about Tony Horton, he’s VERY into warming up and cooling down.  There is about 5-7 minutes of stretching before and after the workouts.  I figure all of this stretching…along with YOGA, is enough stretching in one week.

Well, that was my first week of P90X.  It was hard and I was sore.  My weight was coming off quickly.  I had broken through my 205 pound plateau and weighed 196.  The weightloss would continue throughout the first 30 days of the program.  At day 30, I was weighing in at 175.  A whopping 30 pounds of fat lost in 30 days!

Stay tuned for more of my P90X journey!
